Thematic Series: Health Services Research for Opioid Use Disorders

Edited by Kim Hoffman, Oregon Health and Science University (USA) & Dennis McCarty, Oregon Health and Science University (USA) and Portland State University School of Public Health (USA).

The widespread access to opioid analgesics, the introduction of fentanyl drugs, and the access to enhanced purity heroin have resulted a public health crisis of opioid overdose fatalities in North America and Europe.

Treatment of opioid use disorders is effective, and recently developed treatments significantly reduce opioid related mortality. However, the lack of access and retention in treatment remains a barrier to long-term solutions.

This series aims to illustrate the current applications of tools, treatments, medication and programs in the fight against opioid disorders.

We welcome submissions of research articles, study protocols, opinion pieces, and case studies that address the epidemic of opioid misuse and opioid use disorders, and the strategies that address it. For this Thematic Series, the umbrella term “opioids” also includes opiates.

If you have any research you would like us to consider please submit directly to BMC Health Services Research. Alternatively you can email your pre-submission queries to Maria Zalm (maria.zalm@biomedcentral.com).

The deadline for submission of manuscripts is the 30th of April 2019.
