All results were controlled for the individual characteristics (sex, age, ethnicity, marital status, educational level), individual health conditions (obesity, waist measure, previous diagnosis of chronic diseases, kidney condition, heart condition, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, hospitalized in the previous 12 months), household characteristics (presence of piped water, electric power, sanitation, garbage collection, household income per capita), whether the individual was covered by health insurance or not, if they were a Bolsa Familia recipient or not, if they participated in sports or not, and if they were a smoker or not. The metropolitan ESF supply was measured as the number of local ESF teams by 10,000 inhabitants at the metropolitan level.
