Table 1 Study Eligibility Criteria

Age 18 years or older

Family member present

Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale score ≥ 3 (eligible for delirium detection)

Exclusion criteria

Patient or family did not provide informed consent

Unable to community with research staff (e.g., hearing impairment, not fluent in English)

Anticipated to have an ICU length of stay < 24 h

New primary neurologic injury (e.g., severe traumatic brain injury)

Glasgow Coma Scale score < 9
