Table 1 Factors and their rationale for inclusion

From: What is a hospital bed day worth? A contingent valuation study of hospital Chief Executive Officers

Factor

Rationale

Time of year

Infection rates and demand for services in general are impacted upon by seasonal variations.

Bed occupancy

Hospitals generally operate at very high levels of occupancy and to the extent to which this is the case will impact on demand/need for further beds.

Bed type

Ward beds and ICU beds have different demand and different value.

Operating theatre capacity

The extent to which beds can be useful to a hospital at a given point in time is limited by the capacity of the hospital to perform surgery and hence utilise the beds.

Waiting lists

Fluctuations in the external demand for beds/services affect the need for the resource locally.
