Vascular stage one (n = 9) is no evidence of microvascular comorbidity and macrovascular risk factors, stage two (n = 230) is presence of screen-detected microvascular comorbidities or risk factors for macrovascular disease, stage three (n = 83) is presence of moderate microvascular or macrovascular comorbidities, stage four (n = 57) is the presence of late-stage macrovascular or microvascular comorbidities.
